Earlier this year, Marina and Boatyard Safety Expert, Carl F. Wolf, CMM, CMI presented his findings from a recently conducted research study at the International Marina & Boatyard Conference in New Orleans.

The study focused on drowning incidents in marina waters, specifically concerning persons unintentionally falling into the waters of a marina, as opposed to people intentionally swimming or jumping into the water.

Research identified 107 drowning cases between 2008 and 2017 that fell within the established parameters of the project.
Key findings include:

• 65% of drowning victims were older than 45
• 85% of drowning victims were male
• The two most common incidents were 1) falling from the dock while walking and 2) falling while embarking/disembarking from a boat
• 40% of victims fell into the water while alone Safety suggestions stemming from the research include:
• Children should always wear a personal floatation device (PFD) when near any body of water.
• Embarking and disembarking from a boat can be dangerous. If a “buddy” or companion is unavailable, the use of a flotation device should be considered in the event of a fall into the water.

• Life rings should always be readily available at any waterfront facility.
• Safety ladders placed throughout marinas can offer safe and accessible exit from the water.
• Guidelines pertaining to the location and placement of fire extinguishers may assist the marina industry in identifying “Safety Centers” within the marina to place life rings and safety ladders.

Marina & Boatyard Forensic Investigations
The marina is a dynamic environment where vehicles pulling boat trailers interface with pedestrians, cyclists, other motorists, and watercraft. In addition to the roads, walkways, and buildings involved at most other facilities, the marina introduces a waterfront and great expanses of open water. Investigating injuries and other life threatening incidents in this unique environment requires industry experience and decades of relevant experience. Robson Forensic offers the nation’s foremost experts in marina and boatyard safety.
